Strip away the industry noise and Google has actually been unusually direct about AI Overviews and AI Mode. Here is what the documentation says, what it doesn’t, and what a sensible team does with both.
What Google says, in its own documentation
The core statement sits in Google’s “AI Features and Your Website” documentation: SEO best practices remain relevant for AI features, there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, and no special optimizations are necessary. To be eligible as a supporting link, a page needs the same things it needed for classic search — indexed, eligible for a snippet, meeting the standard technical requirements.
The companion optimization guide explains why: these features are rooted in Google’s core ranking and quality systems, using retrieval-augmented generation over the same search index. The AI layer changes how results are presented, not what earns retrieval.
What that rules out
It rules out the entire category of “secret AI ranking factor” services. If the retrieval layer is the search index and the ranking layer is core search quality systems, then there is no separate lever a vendor can pull that isn’t just… SEO. Anyone selling guaranteed AI Overview placement is guaranteeing something Google says cannot be specially optimized for.
What it doesn’t rule out
It doesn’t mean nothing has changed. Three things genuinely matter more in an answer-assembled world: extractability (a direct, well-structured answer is easier for any synthesis system to use than a meandering one), entity clarity (systems that generate prose about you need to know precisely what you are), and citable evidence (original data gives a generated answer a reason to reference you rather than paraphrase around you). None of these is a trick. All of them are craft — the disciplines we practice as AEO and GEO.
You can now measure some of this directly
Since mid-2026, Search Console has been rolling out generative AI performance reports showing impressions from AI Overviews and AI Mode. Useful, with caveats worth knowing before you build dashboards on it: impressions only (no clicks or query data yet), both surfaces aggregated into one figure, and access arriving property by property. A practical derived metric while it matures: generative-AI impressions divided by web-search impressions for the same URLs and window — a rough AI visibility share you can trend.
The sensible playbook
- Get the foundation right first — indexation, architecture, quality. It gates everything, including AI surfaces.
- Restructure your most important pages answer-first: question heading, direct answer, then depth.
- Make your entity unambiguous — one consistent definition everywhere machines look.
- Publish something only you could publish. Original evidence is the citation magnet.
- Measure honestly: GSC’s generative reports where available, plus your own tracked observations. Trust trends, not single readings.
If you want to know where your site currently stands on all five, that’s the first thing a Search Growth Audit establishes.
